NatureCounts is a data and technology platform — developed and maintained by Birds Canada — that supports the collection, management, interpretation, and sharing of biodiversity data from across Canada and beyond. It began as a data management and sharing solution for Birds Canada’s own programs, but has grown into a sector-leading, international platform used by Birds Canada and many external partners.

At its heart, NatureCounts is a massive, sharing-ready data repository and a set of technological tools that empower researchers and conservation actors to generate a positive impact for birds and biodiversity. It is an unparalleled source for data on birds in (and increasingly beyond) Canada. It is also the home of the State of Canada’s Birds which assesses population status and sets conservation goals for all birds that regularly occur in Canada.
“In the midst of a global biodiversity crisis, these databases may hold the key to detecting important obstacles and threats to conservation, as well as determining the best interventions before it is too late.”
Good biodiversity data is a vital tool for conservation, but it is only useful if the people who need it can access it easily. That’s why NatureCounts exists — to bring together the best possible collection of biodiversity data, and to make it available and accessible to the people who can use it to affect positive change.
