This course is specially tailored for people with a visual impairment such as sight loss and low vision, but all are welcome!

As this course is designed for people with a visual impairment, there is minimal text and low reliance on images or footage to teach core concepts. You can learn simply by listening. Through this video series, the instructor will guide you through concepts to help you start birding. You will learn about basic bird anatomy, behaviours and habitats, and how to start identifying birds by their sounds, including a lesson on some of the most common bird sounds heard in urban environments.

This course was developed as part of the Toronto Bird Celebration. Many of the bird species featured will be more familiar to participants living in Toronto or other urban centers across Canada. Learn about species like the Red-winged Blackbird, Killdeer, Yellow Warbler, Red-tailed Hawk, Song Sparrow, and many more.

This course will take approximately 60 minutes to work through at your own pace. Followed by a short quiz where you will be able to listen to bird sounds heard in the course, and try to identify the species or habitat of the bird you are listening to.
