The State of Canada’s Birds is a partnership between Birds Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada. Launched in 2024, it is an online resource that reports on how Canada’s birds are doing and sets ambitious goals for their conservation.

The State of Canada’s Birds exists in two parts: the species accounts and the report. The species accounts combine monitoring data with expert insights to examine each species’ population trends and status, set conservation goals, and provide a great deal of additional information. The report rolls up the species-level information to explore the state of Canada’s birds as a whole, highlight groups of birds that tell important conservation stories, and motivate conservation action.

There are many ways that the State of Canada’s Birds can be useful to researchers and conservation practitioners. It can be used to:

  • Generate questions and underpin research.
  • Prioritize and guide conservation effort.
  • Assess species (e.g., by COSEWIC).
  • Identify data gaps and monitoring needs.
  • Provide background information for reports and publications.
  • Support funding acquisition.
  • Inform land acquisition and protection.
  • Engage stakeholders and the public.

The State of Canada’s Birds is a dynamic resource that is regularly updated as new information becomes available. It is versioned and citable, and suitable for use in any formal publication or context. The complete methodology for both the species accounts and report is available on the State of Canada’s Birds Methods page.
